Opportunities to Serve

Just as St. Mark's participates in ministries outside of the parish, there are ministries inside the parish as well.

The Baby Room

As of April 1, 2008, St. Mark's operates a new ministry/outreach program to those who are in need for their babies through The Baby Room. Free of charge, St. Mark's networks through 211 to help needy parents with baby clothes, diapers and cribs. This ministry is extended to those parents who qualify. For more information you may contact Abilene 211 by simply dialing "2-1-1" in the Abilene area. You may also contact our deacon, Peggy Valentine, who founded and directs this ministry.

Altar Guild

The Altar Guild prepares the sanctuary for worship prior to services on Sunday, weekday services, weddings, funerals and other special services. The Altar Guild is also responsible for changing altar hangings, cleaning and pressing linens, and tidying up after services. This ministry is on a volunteer basis as your schedule permits. This is a quiet, "behind-the-scenes" ministry for those who love to help create a sacred space for worship.

Altar Servers

St. Mark's encourages all of its members who are physically able to get involved in service at the Altar. Here, lay people of all ages participate by acolyting, carrying the cross, serving as torchbearers, assisting the priest, and administering the chalice. Those who are interested in getting involved in Altar Service should speak with Father Jim.

Yard Angels

Yard Angels is a dedicated group (who are always looking for new people to join) who come together each Saturday for lawn care for the parish.  The group is divided into teams which rotate each Saturday.  This includes mowing grass, trimming edges and hedges, keeping tree limbs cut as needed, caring for flower beds, and the like.

Nursing Home Outreach

One of St. Mark's newest forms of ministry is outreach to Northern Oaks Living Center, a nursing home in the vicinity on Old Anson Road. After the closing of Christ House in Abilene, St. Mark's joined other churches in the area who minister to the elderly at this nursing home. Opportunities include (but are not limited to) teaching crafts, adopting a friend, visitation, writing letters for the residents (many can't write anymore), making craft items, or just dropping by to say hello.
